In this upcoming exhibition, Gajah Gallery pays homage to the language of representation and figuration; featuring works by Adam de Boer (USA), Junyi Lu (CN), Koh Kai Ting (MY), Loi Cai Xiang (SG), Casey Tan (SG), Enggar Rhomadioni (IDN), Nurify (IDN), and Rosit Mulyadi (IDN).
In this age where the course of art history has moved past the convention of representation, these artists, -coming from different generations, gender and cultural background, somehow convergently revives figuration.
In Our Image, After Our Likeness seeks to look at figuration beyond just being a reaction or subversion against the abstract or conceptual movements; and to consider works of art in regions where the progression of art styles and movement differs significantly from western art history and convention.
From modern, contemporary, and post-contemporary realism to contemporary figurativism. The style and extent of what these artists deem as representational also varies. This exhibition investigates mankind’s affinity towards the visual language of figuration through the lens of historical and cultural roots, highlighting the strength and creating conversations between its diverse interpretations.
