유니자르는 일상의 삶에서 시적 울림을 길어 올리는 직관적인 회화와 조각 작업으로 잘 알려져 있다. 영향력 있는 예술가 그룹 젠델라 아트 그룹(Jendela Art Group)의 공동 창립자인 그는 1990년대 후반, 포스트 레포르마시(Post-Reformasi) 시기 인도네시아 미술의 정치적 흐름에서 벗어난 독자적인 시각 언어를 구축하였다. 그의 작업은 익숙한 대상을 절제되고 함축적인 형식으로 환원하며, 현실과 상상의 경계를 넘나든다.
유니자르의 작품은 싱가포르미술관(Singapore Art Museum), 롱 뮤지엄 상하이(Long Museum, Shanghai), 베네세 아트 컬렉션(Benesse Art Collection, Japan) 등 주요 기관에 소장되어 있다. 2021년에는 동남아시아 작가로는 유일하게 프리즈 스컬프처 런던(Frieze Sculpture, London)에 선정되었다.
유니자르는 현재 인도네시아 욕야카르타를 기반으로 활동하고 있다.
Yunizar is recognised for an instinctive approach to painting and sculpture that draws poetic resonance from everyday life. A co-founder of the Jendela Art Group, he emerged in the late 1990s with a distinctive visual language that departed from the overtly political currents of post-Reformasi Indonesian art. His works distil familiar subjects into pared-back, expressive forms that blur the boundaries between the familiar and the imagined.
Yunizar’s works are held in major institutional collections including the Singapore Art Museum, the Long Museum, Shanghai, and the Benesse Art Collection, Japan. In 2021, he was the only Southeast Asian artist selected for Frieze Sculpture, London.
Yunizar lives and works in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Yunizar’s paintings possess a disarming simplicity, yet their presence is far from naïve. Rooted in the Indonesian concept of rasa, familiar Southeast Asian motifs are transformed into distilled forms. What appears playful becomes a deeper proposition: creatures are encountered not as specimens, but as condensed expressions of feeling, memory, and cultural imagination.

Through gestural marks, vivid colour, and fantastical hybrid figures, Yunizar dissolves the boundaries between observation and invention. Here, fantasy and lived experience intertwine, shaping images that feel at once familiar and altered—worlds sensed as much as seen.

이 작품은 360도로 감상할 수 있도록 설계되어 있어, 관람차가 작품 주위를 이동할 때마다 다양한 각도에서 새로운 형태적 관계들이 드러납니다. 수많은 꽃들 가운데 하나는 꽃잎 없이 남겨져 있는데, 이는 아직 완전히 형성되지 않은 상태의 나무, 즉 생성 중인 존재로서의 가능성을 암시합니다.
Through sculpture, Yunizar brings his imaginative forms into the physical world. Pohon (Tree) embodies a playful sensibility through its simplified forms, with branches and petals reduced to their most essential elements.
Designed to be experienced in the round, the work invites viewers to move around it, revealing new relationships between its forms from different angles. Among its many blossoms, one appears without petals, hinting at a tree still in the process of becoming.

(Pasukan Bebek (Duck Brigade))에서 유니자르는 직사각형 받침 위에 일렬로 늘어선 일곱 마리의 오리를 선보인다. 서로 맞닿고 비대칭적으로 형상화된 오리들은 묘사적 세부를 과감히 덜어내며, 전통적인 조형 미감에 대한 작가의 의도적인 거리 두기를 드러낸다. 그러나 이러한 단순함 이면에는 고정된 기대와 관습적인 의미로부터 구상 형식을 해방시키는 섬세하고 치밀한 조형 감각이 자리한다.
청동으로 주조되었음에도 불구하고, 이 조각은 점토가 지닌 촉각적 생동감을 그대로 간직하고 있다. 유니자르는 점토를 청동으로 단순히 옮기는 데 그치지 않고, 모델링 과정에서 형성된 거칠고 유기적인 질감을 유지함으로써 점토의 즉흥성과 청동의 영속성을 하나의 조형 언어로 연결한다.
In Pasukan Bebek (Duck Brigade), Yunizar presents seven duck figures standing in a row on a rectangular pedestal. Fused, asymmetrical, and stripped of descriptive detail, the figures reflect his deliberate rejection of conventional aesthetics. Yet beneath their apparent simplicity lies a sensitive and deeply considered form, one that frees figuration from fixed expectations and prescribed meanings.
Although cast in bronze, the sculpture retains the tactile immediacy of clay. Yunizar preserves the raw, organic qualities of his modelling process, allowing the work to bridge the spontaneity of clay with the permanence of bronze.
