Gajah Gallery presents an eclectic ensemble of eight contemporary artists from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore as part of the Galleries Sector at Sydney Contemporary 2024, showcasing the works of I Gusti Ayu Kadek Murniasih, Jane Lee, Jason Lim, Jemana Murti, Kayleigh Goh, Suzann Victor, Uji “Hahan” Handoko Eko Saputro, and Yunizar. Exhibiting sculptures, paintings, and works that blur the lines between the two forms, the presentation delves into the manipulation of materials and processes as artists seek to defy conventional boundaries and express their ideas in novel and compelling ways.

At the heart of our presentation is the late Murniasih, whose bold paintings challenge taboos surrounding female desire and trauma. Through her surreal works, Murniasih invites viewers into a world where dreams become a conduit for healing and self-expression.

Jemana Murti’s evocative works draw upon traditional Balinese motifs, weaving them into contemporary narratives that explore identity and cultural heritage. Uji “Hahan” Handoko Eko Saputro brings a playful yet critical perspective to his pieces, often addressing social and political issues through his distinctive, cartoon-influenced style.

Jane Lee’s innovative exploration of painting as a sculptural medium blurs the lines between dimensions, while Jason Lim’s ceramic pieces provoke thought and interaction, transcending mere functionality.

Melbourne-based Kayleigh Goh’s reflective works offer viewers a metaphysical space to contemplate ideas of home and rest, while Sydney-based Suzann Victor’s Lens Painting series challenges historical representations of Asian women, rematerialising colonial encounters with humanity and dignity. Yunizar’s raw paintings and surreal sculptures capture the emotional force of vernacular language and primal imagery, alluring viewers into a world of mystery and estrangement.

By participating in Sydney Contemporary, we intend to continue our presence in Australia, fuelled by our participation in the 24th Biennale of Sydney, where Gajah Gallery highlights the works of I Gusti Ayu Kadek Murniasih. Additionally, we feature two female artists who have made Australia their home, Singapore-born Suzann Victor and Malaysian artist Kayleigh Goh.

An integral part of our presentation is the collaborative efforts between our artists and the Yogya Art Lab in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Through this partnership, our artists have been able to explore new mediums and techniques, pushing the boundaries of their practice and creating artworks with the assistance of local artisans.

Together, these artists spark dialogues that traverse geographical boundaries, inviting viewers to explore the dynamism and complexities of Southeast Asian art.
