Gajah Gallery is delighted to announce its participation in Art Basel Hong Kong 2025, presenting a meticulously curated selection of Southeast Asia’s both influential and emerging artists.
Spanning multiple generations and a wide spectrum of artistic practices, this exhibition reflects the region’s dynamic engagement with contemporary themes, historical narratives, and material experimentation. Through their distinctive approaches, these artists explore notions of identity, memory, cultural heritage, and the ever-evolving socio-political landscape of Southeast Asia.
At the heart of this year’s showcase is a dialogue between artistic traditions and contemporary innovation. A key highlight is the presentation of bronze and aluminium sculptures developed in collaboration with Yogya Art Lab (YAL)—Gajah Gallery’s pioneering art space and foundry in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Renowned for its technical excellence and experimental approach, YAL has enabled artists to push the boundaries of materiality, allowing them to refine their material explorations through research and expert craftsmanship.
Several artists have partnered with YAL to create significant new works for Art Basel Hong Kong 2025, further cementing the lab’s role as a catalyst for artistic innovation. Among them, Benedicto “BenCab” Cabrera (Philippines), Mark Justiniani (Philippines), Suzann Victor (Singapore), and Yunizar (Indonesia) will present a selection of bronze and aluminium sculptures, each demonstrating a unique sculptural language. Justiniani, known for his mastery of perspective and illusion, will present two sculptures, including a newly created work alongside a piece from his Infinity series. Yunizar, a defining figure in Indonesian contemporary art, will present a new aluminium sculpture as well as a painted piece of his latest work that further extends his distinctive visual vocabulary.
These sculptural innovations, forged through the collaborative efforts between artists and YAL’s expert artisans, exemplify the lab’s role in shaping Southeast Asia’s contemporary sculptural landscape. Through this ongoing partnership, Gajah Gallery continues to nurture artistic expressions, reaffirming its commitment to expanding the possibilities of Southeast Asian art on a global stage.
Beyond these sculptural pieces, the exhibition bridges generations of artistic voices. Yunizar, a defining figure in Indonesia’s contemporary art landscape, stands alongside fresh talents such as Jemana Murti (Indonesia) and Kayleigh Goh (Malaysia), whose fresh perspectives invigorate the conversation between heritage and reinvention. This dynamic interplay of artistic legacies and new visions reinforces Southeast Asia’s relevance within the global art discourse.
As Art Basel Hong Kong remains a premier stage for the global art world, the Gallery’s participation reaffirms our commitment to championing Southeast Asian artists on an international platform. By bringing together this diverse yet interconnected group of visionaries, the gallery continues to foster critical discourse and deepen global appreciation for the region’s rich artistic heritage and evolving creative expressions.
