Gajah Gallery is delighted once again to participate in the inaugural edition of Art Moments Jakarta, Indonesia’s latest contemporary art fair. Scheduled from 18th to 20th August, it will take place at the Sheraton Grand Jakarta Gandaria City Hotel (Booth B2).
For this year’s edition of Art Moments Jakarta, Gajah Gallery’s presentation shines a spotlight onto the land of Minangkabau – an undeniably important place in definitions of Indonesian art, relevant and recognisable on both local and global scales. A seminal figure in the country’s art history canon, Wakidi played an influential role in shaping the identity of Indonesian painting; though Semarang-born, he came to make Bukittinggi his home.
Across the decades to follow, numerous artists from the Minangkabau region have greatly contributed towards the evolving Indonesian art scene. Pioneering figures such as Oesman Effendi, and Itji Tarmizi published writings on art that continue to be referenced in today’s cultural discourses. Similarly in the late 1990s, a group of young Minang artists – KSR Jendela (consisting of Yunizar, Rudi Mantofani, Handiwirman Saputra, and Yusra Martunus) – brought a refreshing perspective to the uniformity of artistic practices of the time.
The spirit ignited by these previous generations continues to burn brightly today, through artists such as Ridho Rizki, Fika Ria Santika, Herru Yoga, Ibrahim, and Erizal As.
