Gajah Gallery is delighted to announce its first ever participation in Art Fair Philippines. The Gallery will present some of South East Asia’s finest contemporary artists, each of whom possesses immense global appeal: Ashley Bickerton, Handiwirman Saputra, Sabri Idrus, Suzann Victor, Ugo Untoro and Yunizar will be showcased at the fair.
Following the surge in interest and media coverage towards Ashley Bickerton’s (b. 1959, Barbados, West Indies) works since Art Stage Singapore 2016, the gallery will be presenting two paintings from Bickerton’s critically acclaimed ‘Junk Anthropologies’ series. The works prominently showcase a stunning confluence of mixed media – photography, paint and found objects. Bickerton’s works have garnered critical acclaim, appearing in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, among others.
Indonesian artist and Jendela co-founder Handiwirman Saputra structures ordinary objects and materials in innovative ways, framing his perception of simple beauty. Known as one of the most stimulating artists in Malaysia, Sabri Idrus’s work is inspired by surface and spatial stacking in a physical and metaphorical sense. His extensive process of abstraction and layering causes forms to appear, vanish, and intermix; shaping the relationship and the possibility of inter-expression unendingly. Born in Kedah in 1971, Sabri Idrus studied his degree in Fine Arts at the Institut Teknologi Mara, following a diploma in graphic design awarded from the Mensa Design School in Malaysia.
Representing the Singapore contemporary landscape is critically acclaimed artist Suzann Victor, who is regarded as a pioneering figure in Singaporean art history. Suzann is renowned for her kinetic sculptures and has exhibited in numerous important art events such as the 49th Venice Biennale and at the Singapore National Museum. She recently completed a prestigious residency at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute (STPI).
Ugo Untoro (b. 1970, Purbalingga, Central Java, Indonesia) is well-regarded as an innovative artist in the contemporary Indonesian art scene. His raw energy emanates through his contrasting colour palate and the signature impasto techniques he employs. Exhibited across the region and in Europe to major acclaim, Ugo’s works reflect his affinity with contemporary culture. Renowned Indonesian contemporary artist.
Yunizar (b. 1971, Talawai, West Sumatra, Indonesia) continually proves his massive appeal to international audiences following his well-received recent solo exhibition ‘The Garden in Eden’. His body of work reflects an ideal of imaginative and authentic expression. Through the incorporation of language and miniature motifs on the canvas, he creates an added dimension of tactility and visual structure that further enhances his paintings.
