Most of Yunizar’s paintings feature a central subject figure surrounded by a disarray of doodles, figures and creatures. His paintings are almost unreadable, something that the artist himself is keenly aware of. Yunizar does not provide much explanation on his art either. He is, in his own words, “merely aware of their aesthetics”, passing over the demand for art’s legibility and forestalling the conventional regard for painting as ‘message. The title of this work for example, directs us to the search for a red hat. Yet the ‘noisiness’ of his work – its lawlessness, its surplus of characters that do not seem to be directly related to each other – distracts us from that pursuit. Instead, it points towards the futility of reducing the painted form to words or descriptions that equate meanings. Yunizar’s paintings are seen as sensations of becoming and flux, of endless possibilities.
