    Gajah Gallery is thrilled to announce its participation in artKYOTO 2023, where it will showcase an exceptional exhibition titled “Contemporary Traditionalism: Journeys of Cultural Confluence.” This unique exhibition will take place within the historic and majestic setting of Nijo Castle, Kyoto, Japan, from the 6th to the 9th of October 2023.

    “Contemporary Traditionalism” features Southeast Asian artists, each offering a captivating view of the complexities of identities and shared traditions through diverse mediums and perspectives. Blending the essence of cultural awareness with the contemporary zeitgeist in a way that resonates with Kyoto audiences.

    Yogyakarta-based Erizal As, Fika Ria Santika, Rosit Mulyadi, and Uji Hahan Handoko Saputro reveal distinct explorations of self and cultural identity, reflecting on the complexities of belonging, tradition, and the impact of modernity on their identities. Malaysian artist Fadilah Karim and Singaporean artist Kayleigh Goh explore the interplay of traditional elements with modern sensibilities, reflecting the dynamic fusion of cultures in their respective countries.

    Despite their backgrounds and perspectives, the artists share a geographical connection that weaves artistic expressions and cultural nuances. The exhibition’s multifaceted approach will foster a deeper understanding of the intricate tapestry of cultural heritage amidst the currents of contemporary life.
