Arin Dwihartanto Sunaryo approaches painting as an expanded medium, exploring the relationship between image and material. He investigates the plasticity of painting through processes that often evoke the choreographic qualities of action painting.
Recognised for his use of pigmented resin, which he transforms into suspended fields of colour, Sunaryo’s pigments are derived from a wide range of sources—from volcanic ash to instant ramen. Through these transformations, he explores how materials carry histories, reflecting on the circulation of matter and meaning in contemporary life.
Sunaryo’s work has been exhibited internationally and is held in the collection of the Guggenheim Museum, New York.

Working across resin, pigments, canvas, and paint, Arin explores the mutable nature of image-making through the transformation of everyday and environmental materials into colour. Drawing from the gestural vocabulary of action painting, his works extend beyond the immediacy of mark-making to consider how matter carries histories, associations, and meanings. Volcanic ash, palm-oil fruits, food, and printed images are ground into pigments, their former identities reconfigured within the painted surface. Through this process, Arin reveals painting as a space where material, perception, and lived experience continually intersect.
