Artist Bio
(b. 1981)
A celebrated Indonesian visual artist, Theresia Agustina Sitompul is recognised for her richly layered printmaking and installation works, often woven with personal and socio-political narratives. She studied Fine Art with a concentration in Printmaking at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta from 1999 to 2007, where she later completed her postgraduate studies and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree. Since 2015, she has also served as a lecturer at ISI Surakarta. Beyond her individual practice, Theresia plays a significant role in fostering artistic communities. She is a founding member of Grafis Minggiran and Art Merdeka, and part of the creative team behind Moekti, an arts therapy programme for children with special needs. Her solo exhibitions have been held in cities across Indonesia and abroad, including Perception (2025, Jakarta), DOA (Pray) (2021, Yogyakarta), and Amygdala: Print and Things (2019, Yogyakarta). Her commissioned works are featured in public spaces such as Museum MACAN and the Indonesia Stock Exchange building.
Theresia has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including First Prize in the “Belanja Grosir Sambil Plesir” Mural Competition, ITC Surabaya (2005); Third Prize at the 4th Indonesia Triennial of Printmaking (2012); and finalist positions in both the Indonesian Art Awards – Ideolect at the National Gallery of Indonesia (2013) and the 2012–2013 Sovereign Asian Art Prize in South Korea and Singapore. In 2013, she was also honoured with the Young Artist Award at ArtJog in Yogyakarta.
