Artist Bio
(b. 1972, Quezon City, Philippines)
Alfredo Esquillo is a contemporary Filipino artist whose work critically examines folk religion, pre-colonial indigenous culture, and spirituality. Utilizing his exceptional technical mastery in oil painting, mixed-media installation, and performance, he constructs visual narratives charged with layered realities and profound historical resonance. His art invites self-reflection and emphasizes the role of human agency and spiritual discernment.
Over a career spanning more than twenty-five years, Esquillo has held 19 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows both in the Philippines and internationally. His work has been featured in major exhibitions organized by institutions such as the Anne & Gordon Samstag Museum of Art, Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, Ateneo Art Gallery, Ayala Museum, Bencab Museum, Cultural Center of the Philippines, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Manila Contemporary, McClelland Gallery & Sculpture Park, Metropolitan Museum of Manila, Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, National Museum of the Philippines, National Portrait Gallery (Canberra), NUS Museum, Singapore Art Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
Esquillo earned his degree in Fine Arts from the University of Santo Tomas. His accolades include the Philippine Art Awards (1995), ASEAN Art Awards (1995 and 1996), the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Thirteen Artists Award (2000), and the Metrobank Foundation’s Award for Continuing Excellence in Service (2004).
In 2017, he established Eskinita Art Gallery in Makati City; which he then moved to Tanauan, Batangas in 2020 as Eskinita Art Farm, a community-based, artist-led initiative that supports emerging Filipino contemporary artists through residencies, mentorship programs, and exhibition opportunities.
He currently lives and works in Laguna and Batangas, Philippines.
