Artist Bio
(b. 1981, Thailand)
Imhathai Suwatthanasilp is known for using human hair as the main material to create her works, relating hair to the human experience through tactility and emotion. Suwatthanasilp’s works explore ideas around gender, life, death, violence, morality, belief, and ritual which shape the character and behavior of people in Thai society. Her work emerges from two primary experiences: Firstly, when her father cut his hair to give to her and her three sisters in 2003. And secondly, her passion for crochet that she has cultivated since she was ten years old. As an artist, she has now expanded her interest to a wider variety of materials while retaining a special preference for fragile materials that come from nature.
