Gajah Gallery proudly announces the international solo debut of Hyangro Yoon titled Drive to the Moon and Galaxy. Supported by the Fund for Korean Art Abroad (FKAA), this landmark exhibition is a creative collaboration between South Korea and Indonesia, and will be held in conjunction with Yogya Art Lab’s 10th anniversary and the tail end of ARTJOG. This collaboration aims to do more than just introduce Hyangro’s practice to the Indonesian art scene. It also seeks to explore the commonalities and differences between digital visual trajectories in Indonesia and South Korea.
The show will take place in Gajah Gallery Yogyakarta between the 18th of August to the 10th of September 2023, with a launch ceremony on the 25th of August.
Technological advancement continues to shape the world, leaving an indelible mark on all facets of human life, including the art sphere. Hyangro’s artworks have always focused on critiquing and subverting digital image consumption. The exhibition will feature three compelling bodies of work: the Screenshot series, the Tagging series, and the titular series Drive to the Moon and Galaxy. All three series share a common thread: the interrogation of images and representations, particularly those displayed on digital screens. The exhibition delves into how Hyangro redefined the boundaries between painting surfaces and device screens.
In the titular and most recent series, Drive to the Moon and Galaxy, Hyangro zooms pictures to the point of breaking their resolution and, through paint splatters, simulates images of the galaxy. Through this presentation, Hyangro offers her audiences the opportunity to ponder the future of painting in this digital epoch. This exhibition will also be followed by an artist talk and tour on August 26th – 27th. The artist will be present in Yogyakarta for the exhibition launch and the public programme.
This collaboration is made possible by the generous support of FKAA, which plays a crucial role in promoting Korean artists and their works on the international stage. It also signifies a significant milestone in the dialogue between the South Korean and Indonesian art communities, forging new connections and artistic friendships that transcend geographical boundaries. This programme also presents a chance for future collaborations between local and international artists.
