Gajah Gallery is pleased to announce Koh Kai Ting’s first digital solo exhibition, entitled Pasang Surut.
Pasang Surut presents a fresh body of work by Koh. Drawing from her year-long residency at Pulau Ketam, she incorporates maritime motifs and lustrous colour palettes found around in the locals’ gear, boats, and houses.
With these images barnacled to her mind, Koh portrays her subjects as cautionary zodiacs of a new schism. The artist stratifies acrylic paint onto plexiglass, then creates another polyester mesh layer of coastal beings: kinbaku crabs, lacerated gudgeons, neon squids, and such. These creatures transform into archetypal protagonists, such as vulnerable travellers navigating modernity.
